Harris, Hughes star for United in semifinal win over Freyberg

CRICKET: Star efforts from Cam Harris and Mason Hughes propelled United into the two-day final after a first-innings win over Feryberg in the semifinal.
Harris took five wickets and Hughes scored a ton as United were too strong at Manawaroa Park at the weekend.

United will play Marist in the decider at Fitzherbert Park this weekend after Marist beat Palmerston on first innings.

Veteran seamer Cam Harris helped United roll Freyberg for 104 in 37.1 overs, taking 5-34 from 13.1 overs. Seamer Greg Berry picked up 3-21.

Freyberg No 3 Jack Wenham tried to resist with 33 at No 3, but had no other support. Cameron Harridge scored 21 at No 10.

United then piled on the runs to be 333-8 at stumps on day one and they called it a day there.

Hughes scored 158 from 124 balls, hitting 22 fours and four sixes, to set up their big total.

Braden Rowe helped with 32 not out, Tom O'Connor scored 27 and Hayden Hill 27 not out.

Seamers Brad Fulton, Tom Wilson and Ali Akhter took three wickets each for Freyberg.

In the other game, Marist scored a good total on the first day, then dismissed Palmerston cheaply.

United made 324 in 74 overs, with most of the batting order chipping in.

Last weeks centurion Seamus O'Reilly top scored with 70, Floyd na Nagara scored 66, Connor Morriss 58 not out and Jacob Edmonds made 49.

Varun Walia, Rahul Bhardwaj and Connor Harris all took two wickets for Palmerston.

In the red caps turn at bat they scored 55-3 at stumps, but could only make it to 124 in 41 overs before being dismissed.

Rob Sheary top scored with 21 as the Marist seamers Morriss (3-12), Matt Wells (3-22) and Jack Gleeson (2-53) cleaned Palmerston out.

In the womens competition, Freyberg will take a psychological edge into this weekends twenty20 final after a six-wicket win over United at Hokowhitu Park.

The two sides finished the regular season as the top two teams and will clash in Saturdays final.

United scored 115-4 through 34 not out from Jenn Harmon and 31 from Leesa Baker. Sarah Calkin took two wickets for Freyberg.

In reply Freyberg reached 116-4 in 16 overs, with Kirsten Kilmartons 30 the top score and Courtney Infield made 20.

Marist finished third on the standings after a nine-wicket win over Feilding.

Feilding batted first and were dismissed for 86 in 15.5 overs, with Holly Powell scoring 38.

Marist spinner Molly Noema-Barnett took tidy figures of 3-6 from four overs, while CJ Kane and Jamie Croucher took two wickets each.

Marist cruised to the total in 14.2 overs, reaching 87-1 off the back of 42 not out from Aria Cameron.

Palmerston North Girls High School won a low-scoring game against Dannevirke by four wickets at Dannevirke.

Girls High scored 98-6 in the second innings with seven balls to spare, overhauling Dannevirkes first-innings total of 97-5.

Ashtuti Kumar top scored for Girls High with 23 at No 3 and opener Jordyn Gloyn made 20.

Dannevirke seamer Anna Clark took 3-10.

Earlier Dannevirke scored 97-5 after Emma Harvey scored 27 and Clark made 23 before retiring.

Marist and Girls High will play off for third and fourth place, and Dannevirke and Feilding will play to decide last place.

The Freyberg men won the premier two one-day final, beating Old Boys by nine wickets. Old Boys made 149 batting first and Freyberg reached 150-1.

The Palmerston North Intermediate School girls team qualified for the national championships later in the year after winning the Central Districts qualifiers at Huntley School in Marton last week.

It is the first time a Palmerston North team has qualified.

Intermediate Normal beat Huntley by 10 wickets, Stratford Primary School by 96 runs and St Matthews Collegiate School by 67 runs.

Freyberg 104 (Jack Wenham 33, Cameron Harridge 21; Cam Harris 5-34, Greg Berry 3-21) lost to United 333-8 (Mason Hughes 158, Braden Rowe 32*, Tom O'Connor 27, Hayden Hill 27*; Tom Wilson 2-25, Brad Fulton 2-64, Ali Akhter 2-70) on first innings.


United 115-4 (Jenn Harmon 34, Leesa Baker 31; Sarah Calkin 2-12) lost to Freyberg 116-4 (Kirsten Kilmarton 30, Courtney Infield 20) by six wickets.

Feilding 86 (Holly Powell 38, Molly Noema-Barnett 3-6, Jamie Croucher 2-12, CJ Kane 2-13) lost to Marist 87-1 (Aria Cameron 42*) by nine wickets.

Dannevirke 97-5 (Emma Harvey 27, Anna Clark 23 ret; Ashtuti Kumar 3-17) lost to Girls High 98-6 (Kumar 23, Jordyn Gloyn 20; Clark 3-10) by four wickets.
